George Headley Stone, 85, went to be with his Lord and Savior on December 26, 2016. He was born on September 4, 1931, in Groveland, Florida, to Boyd Headley and Macy Madeline Stone. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and graduated from the University of Florida with a B.S.B.A. degree in 1957.
During his career, he was an accountant in the heavy equipment, trucking and automotive industries. After retirement, he worked part-time in H&R Block’s Premium Office where he made many good friends. He was a longtime member of Avondale United Methodist Church. George enjoyed fishing, reading, literature, history, baseball, and especially spending time with his family. He was a kind, gentle, wise man who will be missed by all who knew him.
George was predeceased by his brother James; and sisters Mary Rutherford, Ruby Schwartz and Nettie Cason. George is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 32 years, Sylvia Bruce Stone; daughters Laurie Sue Wright and Melanie Beth Collins (Fred); grandchildren Amanda, Lauren, and Clark Wright; and Freddie, Shari, and David Collins; brother William Stone (Lenn); nephew Boyd Rutherford (Nancy); nieces Bonnie Jean Collins, and Bridget Rutherford; and many grandnieces and grandnephews. The family would like to thank Cher, Lisa, and Reggie for their loving care.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at on Friday, January 20, 2017 at 3:00 pm, Pastor Clare Chance officiating, at Avondale United Methodist Church, 1651 Talbot Avenue, Jacksonville, FL 32205. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Avondale United Methodist Church in memory of George H. Stone.
