George was born in High Point, NC, on March 10, 1947. After graduation from High School, he joined the United States Air Force and became an Air Security Force Guard. He attained the rank of Sergeant and was honorably discharged. George attended Gardner-Webb University and graduated with a degree in Business Administration. Missing the excitement of military life, in 1981 George enlisted into the United States Navy and served until 1998 as a Store Keeper and attained the rank of Petty Officer Second Class. He completed over four overseas deployments during his long and distinguished career. In 1990, he participated in the liberation of Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm. He was a member of Father Maher Council #648 Knights of Columbus at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Jacksonville. He was an active volunteer at NAS Jacksonville Naval Hospital. He was a member of the Italian American Club of Jacksonville and a member of the Friday Night Dance Club. His military awards include: Southwest Asia Service Medal, Navy/Marine Corps Overseas Ribbon, Navy Expeditionary Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (4 awards), Joint Meritorious Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal (2 awards), and the Kuwait Liberation Medal.
George was preceded in death by his first wife, Julia Lynn Simons, his mother Augusta Williamson Nicholson, and his father George M. Nicholson. George is survived by his wife, Maria Nicholson, his brother Bob Nicholson and sister-in-law Amy Nicholson, his sister Libby Fisher, his daughter Rachel Nicholson, his son Michael Nicholson, his granddaughter Delilah Kozloski, and numerous nieces and nephews. He will also be missed by Maria’s family, Pat and Chuck Biggers and their children Tom Biggers and Jennifer Biggers, Paul and Hilda Hand and their daughter Allison Reinboth, Carl and Mary Ann Hand and their children Lindsay Hand and Loren Hand.
The viewing will be from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, May 4 at Hardage-Giddens Riverside Memorial Park and Funeral Home. The service will be conducted at 11:00 am, on May the 5th, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on 5752 Blanding Blvd and will be presided over by Father James Kaniparampil followed by the interment at Hardage-Giddens Riverside Memorial Park.
