George Edward Bentley, 92, of St. Augustine, Florida and formerly of Tampa, Florida passed away on Friday, June 18, 2021 at Westminster of St. Augustine. George was born on December 29th, 1928 in Atlanta, GA and was the son of the late John Frank and Kathryn Criswell Bentley.
George graduated from Boys High in Atlanta. He attended Emory University and the University of Georgia from which he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism. After graduating, George served in the US Army before working as a writer for the Tampa Tribune and Channel 13. He finished his professional career in residential real estate. His real estate career began at Yates Realty in Gainesville, Florida and continued in North Tampa at Sunstate Realty, helping to develop the Carrollwood area. He started a realty company in 1976, George E. Bentley Realty, from which he ultimately retired. While a Georgian by birth, George moved to Florida in the late 1950’s and adopted the Sunshine State as his new home. He enjoyed the Gulf Coast and had an uncanny ability to float off asleep in the warm salt water. He watched many sunsets from his Sand Key Beach terrace in constant search of the perfect green flash. George was an avid researcher of information on many levels, and, while never adapting to 21st century technology, he loved to have others “google” for him!
George is survived by his wife of 62 years, Harriet Fleming Hill Bentley; two children, Betsy Visvis and her husband Chris of Wellesley, MA; Hill Bentley and his wife Lisa of St. Augustine, FL; his brother, Tommy Bentley; and four grandchildren, Meagan and Michelle Bentley and Amanda and Taylor Visvis. He is predeceased by his sister Barbara Ackerman.
