Dr. Gary V Latham, age 87, died on February 12, 2023 at Bailey Center in Saint Augustine, FL. He is survived by his wife, Lu Ann, his daughter, Kary Anne Counce, his brother Dr. Keith R Latham and his sister Merlyn Reeves.
Dr. Latham was born and raised in Pennsylvania and graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 1958 with a degree in geophysics at Columbia University. While still a graduate student at Columbia, he began his career in science as a member of the science team on the first Arctic sea ice station established by the United States in 1957. While at Columbia, he led a team of scientists and engineers in the design of an instrument to be placed on the lunar surface by the astronauts of the Apollo missions to monitor moonquakes and meteoroid impacts. He joined the faculty of the University of Texas in 1972 where he taught and continued planetary research until he joined Chevron in 1981 to continue research in oil exploration. After a brief stay at what was then, Cities Service Corporation in Tulsa, Oklahoma, he concluded his professional career with 22 years of government service in the Department of Energy in Washington DC. Shortly after his retirement, Dr. And Mrs. Latham moved from their home in Virginia to the Cascades community of World Golf Village in 2011 where he pursued his love of gardening, fishing and cards. Following his wishes, no funeral service is planned.
