Gary was born on April 3, 1949, in Jacksonville, Florida, and is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Edna; son Paul Austin (Emory); daughter Denise; grandsons Andrew, Austin, and Adison; brothers Craig (Sharron) and Dale (Marcie); and his nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Anthony Austin Browning, Jr., and his mother, Dorothy Marie Browning.
Gary was proud of many things: his family, faith, and 23 years in the United States Army, retiring as a Master Sergeant E8. While in the service, Gary served his country several times in Seoul Korea, most notably during the 1988 Summer Olympics, and briefly taught at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, FL, before retiring from service.
Gary worked 40 years as a dedicated employee with the railroad, starting with the Seaboard Coastline and retiring from CSX Transportation. In the beginning years with the railroad, Gary's buddies bestowed the nickname "Hound Dogg" while he was working in the yard.
He was a dedicated Florida Gators fan. No matter what, he always wore Orange and Blue and cheered, "Go Gators."
Gary was an active member of the First Coast Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and loved working in the children's nursery and Awana ministries. After retirement, he worked for Walmart and as a crossing guard for the Duval County Schools for five years.
Visitation and service will be at First Coast Baptist Church 7587 Blanding Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32244 on Saturday, October 28, 2023, starting at 10 AM with a committal service following at 1 PM at Riverside Memorial Park, 7242 Normandy Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32205.
