Frederick "Tio Freddy" Phillips

Frederick S. Phillips, 94, beloved World War II Army Air Force Veteran, passed away in Jacksonville, Fla., on Aug. 12, 2014. Born on July 1, 1920 in Burlington, Vt., he was an accomplished photographer. He met his wife, Julia, of 70 years, while doing military aerial mapping of Chile in 1944 as part of the WWII effort. After the war, he worked for the Department of The Army in Ft. Lee, Va., as a civil servant photographer. Throughout this time he also operated his own successful photography studio. After retirement, he relocated to Jacksonville, Fla., where he worked at the Winn Dixie Photo lab until he was 87. Fred enjoyed memberships and held offices in several clubs including the Knights of Columbus, VFW, and Optimist Clubs. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Julia; his son, Raymond and daughter-in-law, Rhonda; grandson, Frederick and wife, Crystal; and his great-granddaughters, Reese and Riley. He also leaves behind a very large extended family and many friends. Fred was a devout Catholic and worshipped at the St. James Church in Virginia. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Greenlawn Funeral Home, 4300 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville, FL, 32207, (904-396-2522). The family will happily receive friends on Friday, Aug. 22, 2014, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home for the viewing.
