It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Floyd T. Allen, 94, born on May 22, 1929 in Smithville, TN. He passed away very peacefully on Friday, July 28th, 2023 in his hometown of Jacksonville, FL. A man whose life was devoted to his country and community, simply known as “Allen” to all his family and friends, leaving behind cherished memories that will forever be etched in our hearts.
He retired from the U.S. Navy in 1969 after twenty years of service where he dutifully devoted his life to the noble cause of safeguarding his homeland. Allen’s commitment to his duties earned him the admiration and respect of his fellow servicemen, and he was honorably retired from the Navy. In 1972 he went to work for Baptist Hospital as an A/C and refrigeration engineer demonstrating the same level of excellence and dedication that he had exhibited throughout his life, ensuring the comfort and well-being of countless patients and staff.
After full retirement in 1991, He loved spending time at the lake, planting a garden, fishing and spending time with friends. He was a fixer of all things - meticulous in all that he worked on. Although he never had children, his compassionate and generous nature extended beyond his blood relatives as he took on the roles of a loving son, brother, and devoted friend. He became a mentor to many, sharing his wisdom and guidance with those seeking his counsel. Perhaps one of his greatest joys was being “Papa” to his neighbors, Farris and Sheryl Vickery’s four children. He was the best. From keeping DP (Dr. Pepper) in the outside refrigerator, to shooting the BB gun over the back fence, involving them in constructing and building things, to stopping at the minute market to buy candy and coke spoiling them after he had picked them up from school. He was the consummate Papa.
Allen’s life was touched by both joy and sorrow, having experienced the loss of his precious wife of 53 years, Carrie L. Allen, on March 28th, 2023, along with his parents Lafayette and Winnie Adcock Allen; Siblings: Eula May (Walker), Ursula (Ray), Wilma Nadine (Patterson), Edison Allen, JB Allen, and Clyde Allen. While each loss weighed heavy on his heart, he found solace in the fond memories of their time together.
He is survived by his caring sister Betty Sue Babapulle (Bill ) of Strongsville, Ohio; three step sons: Donald L. Doyle (Ester Doyle) of San Antonio, Texas, Randy L. Doyle of Dallas, Texas, Ralph L. Doyle of Jacksonville, FL., and a host of nieces and nephews.
The most amazing thing occurred when on June 30th, four weeks before he was called home, Mr. Allen was met with the great love of God, admitted his sin, confessed that Jesus was the Savior, Son of God who died for his sins and as the promise of God is sure, Mr Allen is now in heaven enjoying the presence of God.
We will remember and give honor to Mr. Floyd Allen on Thursday, August 3rd, 2023 at Hardage Giddens Chapel Hills at 850 St. Johns Bluff Rd. Jacksonville, FL. Viewing and Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. - 12:00p.m. with a graveside service following, concluding with Taps honoring his service to the United States of America.
