Evelyn Marie Rudy was born on July 13, 1920, second child and first daughter of William Fred Weiss and Mahala Frances Weiss (nee Byers). Raised with two brothers and a sister during the years of the Great Depression, Evelyn began work as a stenographer upon completing high school to assist the family during hard times. She was the first recipient in the state of Missouri to earn the award for taking dictation at 140 words per minute, and she applied her skills so effectively during her career in the Civil Service that she was assigned as secretary to very senior officials in the Department of Defense. In 1942 she married Eugene C. Rudy, a career sailor who served from 1941 through the mid-1960's. Rudy, as her husband was called, served on numerous ships and in posts abroad, but his last two assignments were in Florida, which the two of them liked so well that they lived there for more than 50 years. Evelyn was pre-deceased by her husband in 2009, and by her brother Gilbert and sister Irene. She is survived by her brothers, Melvin W. Weiss and Edward Wayne Weiss (wife Marlene), her nieces Elizabeth, Anne Marie, Alice and Paula (husband Don) and her nephews Roger (wife Linda) Steven, Russell (wife Darlene) Eric, David (Mary Ann) and Bill. Evelyn and Rudy were long-time members of the Englewood Baptist Church. She practiced the Christian virtues that were a bedrock of her faith, and generously supported a variety of charitable organizations. She will be missed by her family and a host of friends with whom she corresponded around the world. A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at 11:00 AM at the Englewood Baptist Church 5675 Kennerly Rd. Jacksonville, Florida 32207. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Hardage-Giddens Greenlawn Funeral Home and Cemetery, 4300 Beach Blvd. Jacksonville, FL 32207.
