Evelyn Earnest passed away July 6, 2016 at N.E. Community Hospice Hadlow Center. She was born on May 14, 1927 in Tyler, Minnesota and was the daughter of Isaac and Jennie Steenhoven; she was one of seven children. She moved to Jacksonville after visiting relatives and meeting her future husband. She was employed by St. Vincent Hospital and later by Baptist Medical Center, retiring in 2001 after 35 years of service as the Supervisor of Special Chemistry.
She loved working behind the scenes to help others, never seeking recognition for her good deeds. Each year she played the role of Santa Claus and took time to create stockings and made unique gifts for the staff at the hospital. Evelyn “Snookie” was beloved by her family and her co-workers and she will be missed by all of them.
She was predeceased by husband, Phillip Austin Earnest, her husband of 55 years; and is survived by her daughter, Janna Thomas; two grandsons, Jerry Howell, and Whiddon Howell; and three great-granddaughters, Olivia, Takila, and Ella-May. Evelyn and her husband were founding members of San Jose Church of Christ, and she was the first person baptized there.
A memorial service will be held at Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Chapel at 10:00 AM on Monday, July 11, 2016 with Brother Mike Johnson, officiant. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Evelyn’s name to the San Jose Church of Christ, Faith Moves. Please Sign the guestbook at www.hardagegiddensoaklawnchapel.com
