Elwin R. Smith, 99, of Jacksonville, Florida died October 22, 2017 surrounded by family. He was born in Elba, New York on March 20, 1918. Elwin was a longtime member and Sunday school teacher at Lake Shore United Methodist Church. He served as a pilot in the Army Air Corps during World War II in both the European and African theatres. He was also responsible for transporting paratroopers as part of the D Day operations. After serving his country, Elwin started a career as a Quality Control Engineer for the Chevrolet Division of General Motors in Detroit, Michigan. He retired in 1974 and lived in the Ocala area, then in Jacksonville.
Elwin is preceded in death by his wife, Doris E. Smith; and a brother, Bert Smith. He is survived by one brother, Duane Smith; two daughters, Jean C. Smith and Barbara G. Martin; three grandchildren, Dale Edward Martin, Ryan Peter Martin and Matthew Noah Martin; and five great-grandchildren, Nathan Edward Martin, Logan Riley Martin, Michaela Grace Martin, Tobias Richard Martin and Rebekah Elizabeth Martin.
Visitation will be held from 5:00pm - 7:00pm on Thursday, October 26, 2017 at Hardage-Giddens, Riverside Memorial Park & Funeral Home, 7242 Normandy Boulevard. The funeral service will take place at 11:00am on Friday, October 27, 2017 at Lake Shore United Methodist Church, 2246 Blanding Boulevard, followed by the burial at Riverside Memorial Park.
