Eleanor Carter Gordon, 96, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on March 9, 2018. Born in Albany, Georgia on June 21, 1921. Eleanor was the daughter and youngest child of the late William Eugene and Mary Elizabeth Robbins Carter. She was a graduate of Albany High School and Freeman Business College. She worked for the US Department of Agriculture for 17 years before meeting and marrying the love of her life, Hal Gordon. They moved their family to Jacksonville in 1960. After Hal’s death in 1973, Eleanor returned to administrative work for Charter Mortgage Company. The remainder of her life was joyfully spent reading, gardening, and watching sporting events. However, as a true southern lady, her happiest times always revolved around her children and grandchildren. Eleanor was a member of Southside United Methodist Church and Chapter CF of the P.E.O. Sisterhood.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband, Hal B. Gordon, Sr.; grandson, Samuel Ellis Gordon; and her five siblings. She is survived by her daughter, Kim (Larry) Malphrus; sons, Hal, Jr. (Patti) and Greg (Christina) all of Jacksonville; grandchildren, Jessica (Graham) Arpen and Ryan Malphrus of Jacksonville, and Rebecca (Jason) Dan of Firestone, CO; and great-granddaughter, Jessi Marie Gordon of Tampa, FL; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held Monday, March 19, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Southside United Methodist Church, 3120 Hendricks Avenue, Jacksonville, FL 32207 with interment in Oaklawn Cemetery. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service from 10 to 11 am at the church. The family would like to thank the wonderful people with Community Hospice and Home Instead Senior Care and especially Shavonn Labbe who made Eleanor’s final months enjoyable and fulfilling.
