It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Edward David Sonnenthal, Sr., age 81, a cherished lifelong resident of Jacksonville, FL. Edward was born on January 10, 1942 in Jacksonville and departed from this world on December 27, 2023 surrounded by the love of his family, in the comfort of his home.
Edward graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1959, then enlisted in the U.S. Army to which he served three honorable years. Post-military, he garnered a reputation as a sought-after Porsche mechanic, and graduated from the University of North Florida with a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science, and a Master's degree in Public Administration. Edward dedicated over 30 years of service to the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department beginning in 1969. He concluded his distinguished career as a Captain in the Marine Division before retiring in 2003.
Outside his professional life, Edward and his wife explored the country in their motorhome, reveling in the joy of boating and travel. A banjo enthusiast with a passion for Bluegrass music, Edward found much joy in playing his banjo for his family during their cherished gatherings.
Edward's journey was one of love, dedication, and wisdom. As a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother, he left an indelible mark on the hearts of those fortunate enough to know him. Edward's caring, thoughtful, and loving heart together with his intelligence illuminated the lives of many.
Edward leaves behind a legacy of love and family bonds. He is survived by his devoted wife, Dianne Sonnenthal; his children Candace Yost, Edward D. Sonnenthal, Jr., and Angela Sonnenthal. Edward's warmth and guidance will continue to be felt by his grandchildren Jeffrey, Danielle, Trinity, Bridget, Trey, and Raine; as well as great-grandchildren Gracie, Nora, Edan, Jason, Eliah, Emmy, and Tommy.
In addition to his immediate family, Edward is survived by his brother, William Sonnenthal. He was preceded in death by his parents, Adolph and Gertrude Sonnenthal; and his daughter, Donna Sonnenthal. Edward's family was the center of his world, and his love and presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of being part of his extended family circle.
A visitation for Edward will be held Friday, January 5, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Hardage-Giddens, Riverside Memorial Park & Funeral Home, 7242 Normandy Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32205. A funeral service will occur Friday, January 5, 2024 at 2:00 PM at the funeral home. A committal service will follow the funeral service at Riverside Memorial Park.
