Dr. Thomas John Toman, a man whose life was marked by unwavering dedication and service to God, his family and his country, ascended to Heaven on January 17, 2024. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and raised in a military family living across the United States and Japan, he attended the University of Texas and completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Maryland. In 1963 he graduated as a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) from the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, the world's first dental school. After graduation, he served as a Captain in the U.S. Army with active duty in Germany as part of the 576th Medical detachment. During this time he was in a residency rotation and spent much time in surgery, both dental and general.
In 1965, Dr. Toman settled in Atlantic Beach where he met his beloved wife Patty on a blind date, whom he married in 1966. As a loving husband and father, Dr. Toman, with Patty, went on to raise five children in Atlantic Beach. A train aficionado and nature lover, Dr. Toman enjoyed family time, walking on the beach, swimming in the pool, taking care of his beautiful yard and more recently spending as much time as possible with Patty, his children, six grandchildren, great granddaughter and faithful Miniature Schnauzer, Elsie.
Dr. Toman practiced dentistry for 51 years in Neptune Beach, originally building a practice with another dentist and in 1975 established his own family practice, First Coast Dentistry. From 2003, until his retirement in 2014, Dr. Toman worked alongside his son Dr. Timothy J. Toman. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Toman’s passion for dentistry and helping others also led him to work for many years as a volunteer dentist at Shands Hospital Jacksonville (now UF Health). He was a member of the American Dental Association and many other dental societies and organizations around the world, and served his community as a member of the Jacksonville Beaches Chamber of Commerce, Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship and past President of the Rotary Club of Jacksonville Beaches.
Dr. Toman dedicated his life to God, from a young age he was a devout Christian and was part of the Jesus Revolution in the 1970s. He later served as a lay preacher, an elder of the Beaches Chapel Church and was a leader at First Christian Church of the Beaches. Dr. Toman witnessed numerous miracles, led many people to Jesus through his testimony and bore witness to countless individuals in his lifetime up until the very last moment.

Dr. Thomas John Toman is survived by his loving wife, Mrs. Patricia Toman; five children Steven John, Peter John, Timothy John, Christine Marie Adams and Deborah Esther Phillips; six grandchildren Thomas, Susie, Dillon, Abby, Maggie and Arlo; a great-granddaughter, Faye; and his sister, Bonnie Toman.
The funeral service will be held at Beaches Museum Chapel, 505 Beach Blvd, Jacksonville Beach 32250 at 1:00PM, Wednesday, January 24, 2024 with Pastor Cris Garrard officiating. Private interment will follow at Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Beaches Museum in honor of Dr. Thomas John Toman.
