Our beloved Doris Stein Farber passed away on January 22, 2011 after a valiant struggle with cancer. She was 77 years old and lived a full life as a wife, mother, and friend to many. As a longtime resident of Jacksonville and the Beaches, she was known for her grace, kindness and friendliness.
Doris was born in Valdosta, Georgia to Bessie and Louis Stein, and the family moved to Jacksonville when she was still a small child. She had an older brother, Joel, whom she adored her whole life. The family had a home in Riverside and also at the Beaches. After graduating from Landon High School, she attended the University of Alabama and then transferred to the University of Florida where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education.
While attending college she met her beloved husband of 49 years on a blind date. Doris and Bob were married in 1955 and began building a home for their family of four children. Doris was a devoted mother and wife, and cherished her family.
She and Bob owned a popular tennis shop, “Love/40,” which she managed for many years, and later in life she became a successful realtor. She enjoyed playing tennis, backgammon, bridge and mah-jong. She also liked traveling to Europe, going to see movies, writing poems for special occasions, and dining out with family and friends.
She leaves behind her four children, Scott, Kirk (Linda), Rhett (Aurora) and Pam, her precious grandchildren, Kael, Aja and Rhys (Alanna and Franklyn), her sister-in-law Susan, and her devoted caretaker Marilyn.
Following a private burial for the immediate family, there will be a memorial service at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 4115 Hendricks Avenue, Jacksonville on Wednesday, January 26 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Community Hospice of Northeast Florida or a charity of your choice.
