Connie T. Moraitis passed away on October 23rd, 2012. She was born December 14th, 1926 in Lovelace, North Carolina to Marshall and Wyoming Bauguess. As a young girl, she helped manage a restaurant, and she was very successful at doing so. With a pleasing, personable personality and beautiful Auburn hair, she took your breath away; she was loved by all those who met her! She attended school at Happy Homes Grade school in Rockingham County, and later graduated from Ruffin North Carolina High School. Her father ran a 600 acre tobacco farm in Pelham, North Carolina before she and her family moved to Danville, Virginia
On December 13th, 1948, she married Demo Moraitis, a Navy man stationed in Key West, Florida. She lived in Key West from 1948 to 1951, where she endured many hurricanes alone since her husband was a flight engineer was assigned to the plane evacuations. She made many friends in Key West, one of which was Mary J. McKnight, who had lived there since 1926. Mrs. McKnight knew everyone in town, so she introduced Connie to them all. She and her family made Connie’s stay very pleasant.
Many military wives needed a rest now and then from the children, and Connie was always able and ready to babysit to give the other wives a rest. Why? Because she loved children of course! And like many of the Navy wives, she assisted in cleaning many rental properties. During all the transfers (From Key West to Maine, Tennessee, Rhode Island, Maryland, and back to Key West), she never complained. Connie kept her husband’s uniform spick and span all during his military life. She wouldn’t allow him to leave home until she inspected him from head to toe.
In 1959, they were transferred to Rota, Spain. Connie loved Spain and the people that lived there. The people she met loved her, and she, of course, loved all the happy children. All the women there wanted to touch Connie’s Auburn hair! She made a great Ambassador for the United States. She learned to cook Spanish foods and many Greek foods from her Greek mother-in-law. Over the years she enjoyed trips to Portugal, many cities in Spain, Italy, and many more.
Through the years, Connie became more beautiful, but she still loved and missed the Navy!
She is preceded in death by her father, mother; sister, Ethel; brother, Paul; sister, Louise; and Inez.
