She was born in 1932, the fifth of eleven children born to Geneva and Elmer Cephus Weaver in Garden City, Virginia. When Claudine was 18 months old, she was stricken with polio and lost the full use of her right leg for the rest of her life. This experience did not deter her and despite many obstacles she graduated from William Byrd High School in 1951. She then moved to Washington, D.C. and worked as a clerk typist for the U.S. Navy Department.
In 1953, she met Barrington Broughan at a YMCA dance. He was a dashing young man who had immigrated from England and was serving in the U.S. Air Force. They were married in December 1953 in Washington, D.C. They then moved to southern California where they lived for eleven years and had three children, Jane Hidalgo, Crystal Theresa and Malcolm Patrick. In 1965, they moved to Winter Park, Florida where Barry worked as a design engineer for Martin Marietta and Boeing while Claudine worked at home as a homemaker raising their three children. In 1972, the family moved to Huntsville, Alabama where Barry worked as a design engineer at PRC and Claudine continued at home caring for their family. In 1974, they moved to Merritt Island, Florida where they lived for the next forty years. There Barry worked as a design engineer for PRC on the Space Shuttle program and Claudine continued to care for her active family, eventually becoming employed by the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office as a Senior Clerk until she retired. In retirement, she enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren, Zachary, Kayla and Molly.
Claudine Broughan is predeceased by her parents, Geneva and Elmer Cephus Weaver, her husband of 54 years, Barry Broughan, her sister Venie Brinson, her brother Franklin Delano Weaver, her brother Maynard Weaver, and her grandson Zachary Broughan.
She is survived by her children Jane Broughan (Highland Mills, NY), Crystal Broughan (Jacksonville, FL) Malcolm Broughan (Jacksonville, FL), her sisters, Zanie Peck (CT), Rainey Benedict(CA), Bonnie James (AL), Margaret June Walker (VA) and Gloria Fay Brown (OK); her brother JC Weaver (FL); her grandchildren, Kayla Broughan (FL) and Molly Broughan (NY); her great grandchild, James Mundie and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
