Given his eternal optimism and “give the shirt off your back” attitude, he was with family until the end. Born in Oakville, CT, on December 5, 1946, Charles was one of 3 sons and 2 daughters of the late Charles O Wilson, Jr and Consuelo (Verzier) Wilson. Charles graduated from W.F. Kaynor Technical High School in Waterbury, Connecticut and later he attained an associate’s degree from Jones College in Jacksonville.
Charles is survived by his beloved wife, Dorothy (Dottie) Wilson and 4 children as well as 4 grandchildren. They include Dean Wilson with his wife Laura; Jeffrey Wilson; stepdaughter Karen Hill with her fiancé Aaron Blouin and children Braden Hill and Tanner Hill; stepson David Shlafer with his wife Gayle Shlafer and children Ben Shlafer and Sam Shlafer. Additionally, he is survived by his sister Sueann Navickas and her husband Francis. Let’s not forget about Mollie, the best dog.
Charles served our country in the Navy during the Vietnam War as a jet mechanic for four years. He served on two aircraft carriers, the Intrepid and the Forrestal. He was very proud to be able to do this and has always flown the stars and stripes proudly on his home.
Charles was a very good mechanic. He enjoyed telling stories about the many muscle cars that he owned and worked on; especially the Chevrolet Impala 409 and the Roadrunner with the 440 engine and six-pack carburetor. Boating and fishing were both favorite past-times of his as well. He was an excellent water skier and often came back with the biggest fish.
Charles loved to cook mostly on the grill. He loved to entertain family and friends, bringing people together to share joy and fellowship. Both Dottie and Charles liked to ask, “Is everyone so happy?” when eating. There was usually no doubt that we all were happy in the moment while loosening a notch or two on our belts. And they truly did care about their guest’s happiness.
Our father and our friend was always someone that you could ask about anything that involved fixing (cars, boats, home improvements, landscaping, etc.) He usually had the best answer for any given task that was quicker and saved you money in the end. His imagination and knowledge of so many subjects was vast.
Chuck touched so many lives. He was never, ever afraid to tell you what he thought. Most likely you would walk away learning something. He was always sincere and honest and the most trustworthy, loyal person many of us have known. His love and kindness for family and friends will never be forgotten. He will be missed.
There will be a celebration of life gathering on Saturday, July 13, 2024, starting at 2:00 p.m. at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 11801 San Jose Blvd, Jacksonville FL 32223.
