Charles Dean Moreland

Charles Dean Moreland passed away January 8, 2015, at home in Orange Park, Florida. He was attended by his wife of 63 years, Ruth Moore Moreland. He was born November 11, 1928, in Belmont, Ohio, the son of the late Homer Moreland and Gertrude Owens. Charlie is survived by his wife, Ruth Moreland, and three children; Greg and his wife Trisha of Latham, New York; daughter Sara of Morgantown, West Virginia; son Joe and wife Sandra, of Cincinnati, Ohio. Grandchildren are Colleen, Charlie, Michael, Rachel, Lukas, Sarah and Seth. He is survived by siblings John Mooreland of New Philadelphia, Ohio; George Moreland of Jewitt, Ohio; Daniel Moreland of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; Nellie Erow of Cadis, Ohio; Amy Wheeler of Cleveland Heights, Ohio; Shirley Yoby of Petersburg, Michigan; Terry Henderson of Los Angeles, California; Shirley Coen of Brilliant, Ohio; Cecil Owens of Tivoli, Texas. Mr. Moreland was a United States Marine and a veteran of the Korean War, serving most notably at the Chosin Reservoir, giving him the distinction of being a member of The Chosin Few. Upon his return from Korea he married Ruth and they made their home in Ohio where he took employment on the track gang with the B&O Railroad in 1952. His career with the railroad spanned 40 years and took him from Ohio to West Virginia, and finally to Jacksonville, Florida. He began as a Telegraph Operator, was promoted to Train Dispatcher, and retired from CSX Corporation as Chief Train Dispatcher in 1992. Charlie was a fisherman and avid golfer and built custom gulf clubs to order. He was a believer in Jesus Christ and lived out his faith in generous and gentle service to others. He took great joy in handy work and was endlessly patient in seeing tasks to completion. He was an active member of the Argyle Church of Christ, Jacksonville, Florida. The viewing will be held there Sunday, January 11, 2015, at 1:00 p.m., followed by the funeral service at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests gifts to American Cancer Society or Haven Hospice of Orange Park.
