Carl Rudolph “Rudy” Gambrell, 83, of Jacksonville, Florida passed away Saturday, February 12, 2022. He was born on May 21, 1938, in Louisville, Kentucky to Robert and Sophia (Reid) Gambrell. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings William "Tubby" Gambrell, Joyce Bergstrom, Lucille Hyde, Virginia Hyde, Gladys Smith, Bobby Gambrell, Franklin Gambrell, and Kenny Gambrell; and daughter-in-law Stacy Tyre Gambrell. He is survived by his loving wife of over 63 years Barbara Daugherty Gambrell; sons Chuck (Nona) Gambrell, Tommy Gambrell, and Chris (Wendi) Gambrell; grandchildren Whitney (Josh) Reynolds, Megan (John) Girtley, Cameron (Tyler) Bright, Madison Gambrell, Hunter Gambrell, and Noah Gambrell; and seven great-grandchildren.
Some knew him as Carl and some knew him as Rudy, but probably his favorite name was Gramps. He was a railroad employee his entire working career, starting with the L&N Railroad in Louisville, Kentucky. That career took him and his family to Florida, Maryland, and back to Florida until retirement from CSX Transportation. He was always an active member of his churches: Beechmont Baptist in Louisville, San Jose Baptist in Jacksonville, Heritage Baptist in Annapolis, and again with San Jose Baptist from 1992 through present day. Many of those years he served as a deacon and was just recently named an Honorary Life Deacon of San Jose Baptist Church recognizing his years of faithful service. In his personal life he was an avid Kentucky fan, made countless woodworking projects, and enjoyed golfing and fishing. In retirement, he stayed busy volunteering at San Jose Elementary, Mandarin High School, and Christian Heritage Academy. He was always serving and helping others, but most important was his love of family and spending time with family.
