Betty was valedictorian of the Callahan High School graduating class of 1943. Upon graduation she obtained a position with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and moved to Jacksonville.
Betty met her husband to be, Hubert C. Bennett, of Fernandina Beach, Florida, while waiting for the old Amelia Island drawbridge to close. They married on June 21, 1945. Betty’s testimony was that her heart was eternally touched by the life of her mother-in-law and that, as a result, she became a Christian.
Betty and Hubert’s love lasted 68 years and blessed them with a daughter and two sons who all became Christians at an early age, partially because of the prayers of their mother. The family moved to Palatka, Florida in 1948 where Betty worked for Florida Power & Light Company. They moved to Jacksonville in 1953. Betty worked at the credit union at St. Regis Paper Company before returning to the IRS.
Hubert and Betty joined North Jacksonville Baptist Church in July 1958. They taught Sunday School and actively participated in many other activities and services of the church.
Betty was predeceased by both parents; her beloved husband, Hubert; and daughter-in-law, Karen A. Bennett. She is survived by three children: Diane Bennett Sibila, Michael Wayne Bennett (Mona), and William Wade Bennett (Ruth); seven grandchildren: Lara R. Ferraro (Scot), Christi R. Bennett, Leah M. Putnam, Chelsea E. Bennett, Briana A. Edwards, Katrissa M. Bennett, Colton Wade Bennett (Claire); two step-grandchildren: Meagan Klein, Alex Klein; three great-grandchildren: Ivie Putnam, Imogen Edwards, and Reegan Russell.
