Aubrey Hubert Owens, 89, passed away July 17, 2018, in Jacksonville, Florida. He was born in Wellborn, Florida to Mildred Zipperer and Ernest Owens. After graduating high school, he joined the Army, served in the Corps of Engineers on active duty in the Korean War, and was honorably discharged.
In 1958 he married the love of his life, Laura Virginia Cox. They recently celebrated their 60th anniversary. He loved farming in South Florida, but to better support a growing family, he went to work for Interstate Life Insurance Co. in Ft. Lauderdale and worked two jobs for many years. He provided well for his family. In 1970 he was transferred to Jacksonville as District Manager and retired in 1991 as Property Claims Manager. Not ready to completely stop working, he took a job with Brinks Armored Car Service.
Aubrey was an active member of both First Baptist Church Pompano Beach and Hendricks Avenue Baptist Church in Jacksonville, where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, and on various committees. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He passed on to his children his Christian faith, along with his superb work ethic and sense of humor. His grandchildren enriched his life and brought him great joy. He looked forward to spending time with them and was always right there watching their participation in sports, dance, music and school programs. He cherished each gift given to him by his grandchildren. No matter how small, they were each a treasure. After retirement, Aubrey returned to his hometown of Wellborn to purchase property which provided a place for the family to relax and enjoy weekends. While there, he was able to farm once again, fish in a nearby lake and view deer and other wildlife.
He is survived by his wife Virginia, his children Patrice Hall, Kendra Nowlin (Bill), and Keith (Leslie), seven grandchildren, Andrew (Taylor), Daniel (Sheila) and Keely Nowlin; Devyn (Josh) and Radyn Hall, Jordyn Jackson (Josiah), Aubrey Owens, two great-grandsons Reid, and Wayde (due in September), and a great-granddaughter due in December. Aubrey also leaves behind three sisters, Patsy Carswell, Ernestine Rowe (Charles), Gayle Nichols (Jerald), Sister-in-law Jean Rhoden, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held in the chapel at Hendricks Ave Baptist Church on Friday, July 27 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. The funeral service will be held in the sanctuary at the church on Saturday, July 28 at 11:00 AM with Dr. Kyle Reese officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Community Hospice, or HAB Global Missions. The family wishes to thank Community Hospice for the wonderful care and support they provided during the last few months of Aubrey’s life. We would also like to express our deep appreciation to Barbara Davis for the compassionate care and support she provided.
