Arthur Christopher Bailey

In His own way and for His purpose, God reached down into His earthly garden to pick one of His most precious servants on the afternoon of October 22, 2020. After a brief illness, He called the spirit of Arthur Christopher Bailey, Sr. to be with Him throughout eternity.

Arthur Christopher Bailey was born to his parents, John Wesley and Carolyn Laverne Bailey of Nashville, Tennessee. Arthur spent his childhood in Nashville where he matriculated in the Nashville and Davidson County Public School system graduating from historic Pearl High School in 1970. He then attended Tennessee State University graduating with a B.S. in History and Political Science in 1974. While in college, he worked at the family business, Bailey’s Cleaners and Shirt Laundry. Arthur knew every aspect of the business, from management to dry cleaning clothes to customer service. After college, Arthur was hired briefly as a history teacher in the Nashville school system. He later secured a job with the Louisville and Nashville Railroad as a train traffic controller. After a few years, he was transferred to CSX Railroad in Jacksonville, Florida, where he retired after 38 years of service.

Arthur was a member of Greater Love Pentecostal Holiness Church in Jacksonville, where he was a Deacon. Arthur was an avid writer and reader. He loved figuring out how things worked. He was always trying out new computer applications such as Zoom. He also made sure to teach his family how to use this technology. Being retired for several years, he recently started substitute teaching with the local school system. The students as well as the administration loved him and tried to get him to teach full time until COVID-19 sent students home for virtual learning.

Williemae, his wife of nearly 20 years says Arthur was a wonderful husband and provider and loving father and grandfather. Overall, Arthur was a man of God who loved people and committed to helping people.

Cherishing his memories are his wife, Williemae Bailey of Jacksonville, FL; his children, Arthur Bailey, Jr. and wife Alycia of Jacksonville, FL; and Candice Bailey of Jacksonville, FL; his stepchildren, George Farmer, Jr. of Columbia, SC; Michael Farmer of Jacksonville, FL; and Chad Farmer and wife Laketa of Jacksonville, FL. Siblings include Anita Cole and husband Leonard of Smyrna, TN, Dr. Ronald Bailey and wife Cheryl of Boise, ID and Donald Bailey of Nashville, TN; 15 grandchildren 3 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
