family called him, was born on May 27, 1916, in Kingsland, GA. He enjoyed the life of a
child raised in the country, where he learned to love the out-of-doors. Throughout his life
his most enjoyed hobby was gardening. His home was the place family gathered for all
holiday celebrations and the day always included a trip to Pop-Pop's garden to see what
was growing.
Pop-Pop married Albertha Martin on June 30, 1941. He was a devoted husband until her
death on May 13, 1992. They had four children, but faced the loss of one, Greg, to illness
when he was 12 years old. Pop-Pop married Evelyn Haddock on April 8, 1997, and they
enjoyed a loving relationship until her death on May 16, 2005.
As with many men of his era, Pop-Pop entered the Army at the beginning of World War
II. He served from D-Day to VE-Day attaining the rank of Sergeant. He was awarded the
Bronze Star among other medals as well as numerous citations and decorations. Pop-Pop
was very proud of his service to his country. He loved to attend the Veterans' Day
parades wearing his WWII uniform.
Pop-Pop worked as fleet supervisor for National Linen Service after his military service
until retirement. His family and friends remember his standard answer to the frequently
asked question, "What's wrong with this?" His answer, "We'll, I don't know, but I know it
can be fixed", and he would "fix" it. He never turned anyone down if they needed him.
Pop-Pop's work ethic was strong, as was his devotion to his faith and his family.
Until the end, Pop-Pop was surrounded by his loving children, Lynnette Hawley, Lamar
Allen, Jr., Anita Shea, his grandchildren Gregory Hawley, Mike Hawley, Alvah Allen III,
Jessica Allen , Casey Shea, Erin Shea, 5 great grandchildren, and 2 great great
grandchildren.
