Al Story was a dedicated individual who lived a life of service and education.
Al served his country for 20 years in the Navy. During his commitment to his country he fulfilled several prestigious positions which included Communications Officer, P3 Patrol Plane Commander, and Attaché. He was awarded several medals of distinction, such as the Navy Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and the Defense Meritorious Service Medal.
After his military career, he continued to serve his community for over 20 years at Fleming Island Elementary teaching gifted math, positively impacting the lives of countless students. His passion for teaching was evident.
His excitement for teaching inspired him to volunteer-coach school math field day teams and Math Counts teams. Al did not believe he was a natural mathematician and felt that this lack of natural ability was what made him an empathetic teacher. He believed that by not having this mathematic ability come instinctively to him, he was able to find improved ways of problemsolving and enhanced ways of learning. Al’s style of teaching was not only engaging, but effective, although he will mostly be remembered for his classroom sarcasm and his “We go to win” attitude.
Known for his passion and dedication, Al was loved by many. He will be remembered for his kindness, his passion for teaching, and his bravery in serving his country. Al’s legacy will live on through the lives that he touched and the lessons he imparted. Although Al was a very humble person, those around him did not fail to see his brilliance as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend to all that knew him.
