“Al” as he was known, was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1939. He attended St. Clements Catholic School in Medford, MA. Following graduation, he attended a technical school for engineering and received an Associate’s degree in Electrical Engineering. After school he served in the Army from 1962-1964 as a Calibration Specialist and was honorably discharged. He then attained a degree in electrical engineering from Northeastern University before beginning to work in the nuclear field. After retirement he and his wife opened Dollar Station on Merrill Rd. That was their passion for 6 years. The love of travel extended beyond his military service and after they retired from their store they traveled to Europe, the Caribbean, and around the US. He was a member of The Loyal Order of the Moose. In recent years he was active in St. Joseph’s Parish and their CRHP program.
Alfred is predeceased by his parents Alfred Sr. and Mary James, his brother Henry James, sister-in-law Maureen James, and sister Carol Kelly. He is survived by his wife of 31 years Sheri (Fiumara) James. He is also survived by his children Ken James (Theresa) of Hardy, VA; Kim Breen (Matt) of Jacksonville, FL; Chris James (Christina) of Sewickley, PA; Sandy Deshazo of Jacksonville, FL; and Megan Forbes (Stephen) of Kingsland, GA. Al leaves behind 21 grandchildren; Payton, Sandy, Benjamin, and Thomas James; Julia, Mary, Michael, John, and Sarah Breen; Nicolas James; Cole and Aiden Mueller; Lauren, Brayden and Logan Deshazo; Asher, Isla, Grayson, Hadley, Everly, and Zoe Forbes. Alfred is survived by his sister Mary (Roy) Scarpato of Burlington, MA and several nieces and a nephew.
His funeral mass will be held on Friday, March 5, 2021 at St. Joseph’s Historic Church in Mandarin at 10:00 a.m.. It will be led by Father Matt King. Interment will follow at the Jacksonville National Cemetery in North Jacksonville at 2:00 p.m.. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Community Hospice of Jacksonville or St. Joseph’s Parish.
