Bert was born on September 6, 1922 in Bradenton, FL. After high school, he attended and graduated from Florida Southern College. He joined the Navy and was commissioned through the Aviation Officer Candidate School program in Pensacola, FL. During WWII, he served as a Naval Aviator assigned to the Pacific Theater.
Following discharge, he pursued a medical degree at Tulane University in New Orleans and completed his internship at Charity Hospital along with his residency.
Bert practiced family medicine for over 50 years. He helped establish the family residency program at St. Vincent’s Hospital and was instrumental in opening their first Family Care Center in 1984.
Dr. Rood was a member of the Duval County Medical Society and an honorary life member and past president of Timuquana Country Club. He was also a past member of the Rotary Club of Jacksonville and was awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship by Rotary International. Bert was an avid golfer and senior Club Champion several times at Timuquana. Bert was also an active member of Ortega United Methodist Church.
Dr. Rood loved life which was shown through his passion for his church, his family, friends and patients. He walked with God and always had words of wisdom, guidance and encouragement for all who met him. He was also known for his humorous jokes and jovial personality.
Preceding Dr. Rood in death are his parents, two sisters and two brothers. Left to cherish his wonderful memories are his loving wife of 61 years, Mary Lucille, three daughters – Debra Lynn Byrd (Clifton), Rebecca Ann Rood, Lori Elizabeth Miller and granddaughter, Leigh Ann Miller along with several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of his life will be held on September 21st at 2:00 o’clock at Ortega United Methodist Church, 4807 Roosevelt Blvd., Jacksonville, FL. A reception will follow thereafter in the Fellowship Hall.
The family extends our sincere gratitude and thanks for the wonderful personal care by the doctors, nurses and staff of the Dr. Gaston J.Acosta-Rua Center for Caring who cared for Dr. Rood in his last days.
