Al, as he was known by, was born in Paraiso, Canal Zone, Panama to Adolphus Ishmael Beckles, Sr. and Esther Jarvis. He married Sonja Patricia Conliffe on November 9, 1968. He graduated from Paraiso High in 1961. He was employed with Merrill Lynch where he worked his way up from entry level to retiring as a bookkeeper after 40+ years. During that time, he was commended for the outstanding service he performed in preserving a critical account. His hobbies included playing golf and Sudoku when he wasn’t watching sports or tv court shows. His love of golf helped influence his grandsons to play the game and they both earned letters in high school and continue to play. He was a devoted member of The Bethel Church and was a part of the Covenant Keepers Ministry for married couples.
Al Beckles was predeceased by his parents and sister Alma Evering. He leaves to carry on his legacy three loving children, Jovanka Beckles [Nicole Valentino] (CA), Jeffrey Beckles (IN), and Janeen Smith [Lionel] (FL); grandchildren Kamari, Brooklyn, Kalani and Lucio [Kimberly]; great-grandchildren, Hayley, Grayson and Diego. He also leaves behind two sisters, Delores Trotman and Ethel Beckles; brother, Roberto Beckles Sr.; a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and other family members.
A memorial service for Adolphus will be held Wednesday, December 18, 2024 at 12:00 PM at The Bethel Church, Historic Sanctuary, 215 Bethel Baptist Street, Jacksonville, FL 32202.
