If you did not know Whitt S. Brown, he was the kind of man anyone would want to know, for he knew no stranger, was quick to laugh and share a story of Jacksonville’s history and treated all with respect. Whitt was born in Jacksonville, FL on January 3, 1928 and resided in Ponte Vedra Beach until his passing on February 9, 2021, aged 93. As a graduate of Robert E. Lee High School and a SE Territory material handling and construction salesman and business owner, Whitt spent most of his life in and around Jacksonville. Whitt served in the US Army, 82nd Airborne, as a paratrooper and mechanic. While serving in the Korean War, he assembled the very first Hiller H-23 Raven Medevac helicopter and was asked by Hiller himself to take its inaugural flight in Korea. As a member of Southside Rotary, Gator Bowl Association and Committee, University Club, Ponte Vedra Club, St. Johns Cathedral, Trinity St. Augustine and Christ Church Ponte Vedra, he loved serving others and being a lifelong learner. His favorite past times were gardening, bonsai, woodworking and cooking and was often seen in local antique stores looking for boxes and lap desks to refinish. Whitt loved to fly but if asked, his family was his passion. He was married to Wanda E. Brown of Orange Park for 68 years until her passing four years ago, and is survived by his daughters Lark B. Roberts (T.S. Roberts), Tamara B. Williams and Felicia B. Bullock, as well as six grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren for whom he loved to teach life lessons. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Veteran Garden Project of St. Augustine, FL https://veterangardenproject.org/donations/.
