Tom Tison, 86, escaped the pain and suffering of cancer on the evening of Sunday, February 22nd. Tom was a veteran of World War II, joining the Navy at age 14, and was a plank owner aboard the USS Yosemite, AD-19, a destroyer tender which operated in the Pacific. Much of his adult life he worked with his hands and retired from St. Regis Paper Company as a maintenance supervisor on one of the paper machines. He was an avid hunter and passed his love of hunting to his grandson, Nick Caruk, who was his sidekick and hunting companion.
Tom is survived by his wife of 63 years, the former Evelyn Richards; his son and daughter-in-law Nick and Lucy Tison; daughter and son-in-law Cheryl and Pete Caruk, son and daughter-in-law Clay and Margaret Tison; sister-in-law and husband, Linda and Wayne Woods; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Connie and Andy Shaw; grandchildren Nick, Alexandra , Hilary , Thomas , Chelsea, Rachel, Colton and Addison; great grandchildren Salvador, Jayden, Ava, and Jack; nephews Ira Smith, Jr., Mark Richards, Paul Richards, Keith Shaw, Kevin Richards and Kyzer Woods; nieces Adelaide Edenfield and Lisa Porter and other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 7, 2015, at 2:00 pm, in the sanctuary of Neptune Baptist Church, Dr. Tom Bary officiating. A reception will be held at the church fellowship hall afterwards. Interment at the Jacksonville National Cemetery will be held at a later date. Thank you to those who called, visited, or cared for Tom during his illness.
