Sara Schneider, 53, passed away November 18, 2011 after a relentless, courageous battle with breast cancer. Sara was born March 9, 1958 in Elkhart, Ind. A lifelong educator, she served on the National Breast Cancer Foundation Research and Accountability Committee, the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation and the Mayo Clinic Florida Patient Safety and Quality Sub-committee. Sara’s 2008 presentation on “Hand Hygiene” marked the first time patients were invited to speak at Mayo Clinic Grand Rounds. A graduate of Indiana University with a B.S. and M.S. in Education, Sara’s passion and focus continued to be on quality patient care and breast cancer research, patient advocacy and education. She put this focus into action by mentoring newly diagnosed breast cancer patients. She was a longtime member of Christ Episcopal Church.
Sara’s priorities in life were God, family and friends. Her selfless nature and compassion for others brightened the lives of everyone she knew.
She is survived by her loving husband of 28 years, Eric; her children Garrett and his wife Lauren, and Meredith; her parents Robert and Esther Slaughter; her siblings Sharon A.C. Slaughter, Susan Moore and David Slaughter, and countless other dear relatives and friends.
A celebration of Sara’s life will be held 1 p.m. Monday, November 21 at Christ Episcopal Church, 400 San Juan Dr. Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, with Mother Joan Bryan officiating. The family requests donations be made to Mayo Clinic Department of Development Breast Cancer Research of Jacksonville, 4500 San Pablo Rd, Jacksonville, FL 32224, In Honor of Dr. William Maples, Dr. Edith Perez and Dr. Alvaro Moreno-Aspitia.
