Mary Gray Scott, 87, of Jacksonville Beach, Fl., passed away on May 9, 2017. She was born in West Virginia attended Mt. Hope High School where she met her high school sweetheart, John. Mary attended Mary Washington College and later transferred to West Virginia University to be closer to John. She graduated with a major in Library Science. Mary and John were married in 1951, and after John returned from the Korean War they moved to Ft. Pierce, Fl., where they began their family and raised four children. In the early 70’s they re-located to Jacksonville Beach.
Mary’s greatest joy was spending time with her family and friends. Known to many as “Mama Scott’ or just ‘Cot’, she loved boating, motor-homing, and planning adventurous long weekends and summer vacations. She will be remembered as a lady of dignity, grace and love. Mary was full of fun and she and John shared a terrific life together. As children and grandchildren, we were truly blessed to be part of this.
Mary is preceded in death by the ‘love of her life’ of 63 years, John Calvin Scott, Jr.; and her brother, William J. Gray. She is survived by all of her children: her son, John Calvin Scott III “Scotty” (Marcia), daughters Julie Louise Scott, Mary-Gray Hollingsworth (Andy) and Beth Dudley Scott. Grandchildren, Tara Scott Shewey (Scot), John Calvin Scott, IV “Johnny”, Miles Patrick Scott, Kaileigh Hollingsworth Niznik (Andrew) and Andrew Scott Hollingsworth “Drew”; and great grandchildren Grayson and Harper Shewey.
The family would like to thank Community Hospice for all their help and Mary’s wonderful and devoted caregivers who provided the utmost excellent care. Because of them, Mary was able to remain in her home.
A memorial service will be held in the Chapel at Beach United Methodist Church, Friday May 19 at 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Northeast Florida Community Hospice.
Arrangements are under the direction of Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 1701 Beach Blvd, Jacksonville Beach.
