Mary H. King

She was born to the late Howard Stanley and Frances Nordlund Holmgren on January 4, 1947, in Kansas City, Missouri. Mary graduated from Benson High School in Omaha, Nebraska in 1965 and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1969.

Although her roots in Nebraska were deep, Mary moved to the Washington, DC metropolitan area in 1972 and eventually settled in Vienna, Virginia in 1976 where she lived for over 40 years. Mary is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law: John Wells King, Jr. (Ashley), of Hillsborough, North Carolina and Andrew Christopher King (Lauren), of Jacksonville. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Austin Bear King and Navie Sophia King, whom she loved so very much.

In addition to raising her two sons, Mary worked for over 20 years as an editor for the American Production and Inventory Control Society (APICS). When not editing, Mary was writing, usually postcards, remaining in touch with the loved ones who filled her address book. She traveled often, many times by Amtrak. A frequent destination was the beach, especially Florida, where she eventually made a home in Jacksonville Beach. Mary was extremely proud of her Swedish heritage and membership in Kappa Kappa Gamma. She enjoyed serving at Vienna Presbyterian Church, supporting the Nebraska Cornhuskers, and spending summers at Vienna Woods Swim and Tennis Club. More than anything, however, she loved her sons, in whose lives she invested heavily and who brought her so much joy.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, June 13, 2020 at the Celebration Church Midtown Annex, 10302 Deerwood Park Boulevard, Jacksonville. A graveside service will be held at 12:30 PM at the H. Warren Smith Cemetery, 1538 Second Avenue North, Jacksonville Beach. Flowers are welcome because Mary loved them.
