Joseph Quentin Newberry passed away on July 12, 2011 after an extended illness. Joe was born on June 15, 1940 at Parris Island, South Carolina, and is preceded in death by his parents , Joseph Ezra Newberry and Annelle Tedder Newberry.
Joe followed in his father’s footsteps and served 6 years on active duty in the United States Navy. He met Faye Elizabeth Hicks, his true love and life partner, in 1962. They married in March 1963 and spent the next 48 years serving each other and growing together as one. They were blessed with a daughter, Bonnie Elizabeth in 1965.
Joe devoted his entire professional career to law enforcement, starting out as a trooper with the Tennessee Highway Patrol before moving to Florida in 1973. He retired from the Jacksonville Beach Police Department in 1995 as a detective.
Joe leaves behind a legacy of integrity and public service. While those who knew Joe best will miss his ready smile, quick wit, and steadfast loyalty, Joe’s greatest impact lingers in the lives he touched while in the service of the community and country he loved.
Joe is survived by his wife, Faye; daughter, Bonnie Newberry-West; grandson, Quentin West; sister, Ann Newberry Wirz; brother, Bill Newberry and nieces, nephews and cousins. We take comfort in knowing that Joe’s Earthly trials are over and that we will see him again in Heaven. Our lives are better for having known such a remarkable man.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Ponte Vedra Presbyterian Church or Hospice of NE Florida. Services will be held at Ponte Vedra Presbyterian Church at 4:30pm on Friday, July 15, 2011.
