1919—2013
Jean was born in Philadelphia on September 20 and died in the Vicar’s Landing medical center on November 6. Jean and her husband, Admiral Parker B. Armstrong, also deceased, moved to the Ponte Vedra Beach in 1989.
Jean grew up in Susquehanna, Pennsylvania. She attended Susquehanna University for one year before moving to New York City to pursue a career as a model. Jean met Parker in 1943, when she was working as a hat model for Millgrim’s Department Store in NYC.
Jean and Parker were married in 1943. Jean lived the life of a military officer’s wife for thirty-seven years, raising three children—Carol, Danny, and Alice, who all survive her and have added three grandchildren and two great grandchildren to her family. Jean always cherished her sixty-year marriage and felt that her life was blessed with good fortune and health.
Jean loved to read history. She collected antiques, enjoyed painting and entertaining, and traveled extensively in Europe and England. Jean’s favorite hobby was miniatures and over the years had several beautiful dollhouses. The most impressive of her dollhouses, a product of Jean’s meticulous eye for detail and Parker’s craftsmanship, now resides at the Ponte Vedra Beach Library where it has been since 2009. This remarkable miniature reflects all of Jean’s refined taste and includes handmade needlepoint rugs, bed linens, curtains, real sterling silverware, and pictures of her family.
Jean served as chairperson for the Christ Episcopal Church Chapel Altar Guild and received the Christ Church Distinguished Service Cross for her ministry. She volunteered as a docent at the Paca House in Annapolis, Maryland and at the Pablo Historical Park in Ponte Vedra Beach. She also enjoyed reading to the first graders at Ponte Vedra Elementary School.
Jean’s remains will be in the Memorial Garden at the Christ Episcopal Church in Ponte Vedra Beach.
The family will hold a memorial service at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Members Association of Vicar’s Landing Members Trust, Vicar’s Landing, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL.
