Donald G. DeWitt, 83, of Atlantic Beach, went home to be with the Lord on July 11, 2011, following a brief illness. He was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio and was a proud graduate of the University of Toledo. He married his high school sweetheart, Betty (Nisch) DeWitt on June 16, 1948 after serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a loving husband, father and especially grandfather, taking particular pride in his grandson’s school and sporting accomplishments.
He spent his entire professional career working for the E.I. duPont de Nemours company, ultimately as the Director of Overseas Employee Relations for the International Division at the company’s corporate headquarters in Wilmington, DE. He retired from DuPont in 1986 after 40 years of service, moving with Betty to Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. They moved to Fleet Landing in 1992 and were members of Palms Presbyterian Church.
Donald was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 50 years, his parents, Loyal and Georgia DeWitt, and his brothers Paul DeWitt and Steve Parker.
He is survived by his daughter, Darcy DeWitt and grandson, Jordan DeWitt, of Jacksonville Beach, and his son, Jonathan DeWitt of Newark, DE.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Fleet Landing, particularly those in the Skilled Nursing annex, for their loving care and support during this difficult time.
A memorial service for family and friends will be held on a date to be determined at Beaches Chapel in Neptune Beach, officiated by Pastor Steve McCoy. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Beaches Chapel School building fund, 610 Florida Boulevard, Neptune Beach, FL, 32266.
Arrangements under the direction of Beaches Chapel by Hardage-Giddens, Jacksonville Beach, FL.
