Charles B. "Chuck" James, 77, Jacksonville, died on June 3, 2019. Born in Louisville, Ky., then moved with his family to Owensboro, Ky. After spending much of his childhood in Owensboro, Ky., the family moved to Daytona Beach in 1959 where he graduated from Seabreeze High School with the class of 1960.
He had a position of employment managing Morrison's Cafeteria in Daytona Beach before marrying Janice Dean Griffin of Jacksonville Beach. In 1963 he enlisted in the U.S. Army. Upon completion of his enlistment, Chuck attended the University of South Florida and graduated in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Marketing. After graduation, he accepted a position with the Alcoa Corporation in Los Angeles, California, from 1969-1970.
In 1970, Chuck returned to Jacksonville Beach where he purchased and operated the Jacksonville Beach Bus Station/Restaurant. He worked alongside his father-in-law, Frank Griffin, owner of Griffin Amusements on the Boardwalk of Jacksonville Beach. In 1973, Chuck became an associate real estate developer and began working for Fred Ahern, Sr. Chuck worked for Mr. Ahern from 1973-1984 and together they developed Seven Pine Island and Holiday Harbor Waterfront. From 1984 - 2002, Chuck served as a project manager for Florida Title Group developing The Woods, Pace Island and the Plantation at Ponte Vedra. Chuck worked with Arnold Palmer on the golf course design. Chuck received a lifetime membership from Mr. Palmer in appreciation of his excellent work on the project. In 2001, Chuck joined in partnership with Buddy James, Mike James and Bill Brannen to purchase the Jacksonville Utilities Management, LLC; Chuck served as vice president of the firm until February, 2019.
Chuck is survived by his wife, Denise (nee LeBlanc); daughter, Deana; sons, Scott and Griffin (Terri); granddaughter, Lawson; sister, Shirley Pankovich; step-daughter, Lauren McCullough; step-sons, Thomas Barnard (Ashley), Christopher McCullough; step-grandchildren, Emily Barnard, Kiya Barnard, Peyton Starling, Cayden Starling, Sarah Barnard, Elizabeth McCullough, John McCullough, Brian McCullough, and Claire Jewell. He was pre-deceased by his first wife, Janice and his parents.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 7, 2019 at the HARDAGE-GIDDENS FUNERAL HOME, 1701 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville Beach with Rev. Dr. Tom Bary officiating. Committal service with military honors rendered by the U.S. Army will be conducted immediate following the service at H. Warren Smith Cemetery, 1538 2nd Ave. N., Jacksonville Beach. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 5 - 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 6, 2019.
