Susan was born to the late Leon and Katie Clanton on August 6, 1951, in Humboldt, Tennessee. She attended school in the Madison County School System and graduated from North Side High School in 1969.
After graduation, Susan attended the University of Tennessee at Martin where she graduated with a degree in education. Susan married David Dougan of Jackson, Tennessee, on August 16, 1974, and began teaching in Hardeman County, Tennessee. Her teaching career spanned 40 years, all in elementary school, and included service in Desoto County, Mississippi, and in the Memphis City and Humboldt City School Systems. She loved all of her students, and she often said her favorite thing about teaching was watching students learn to read. Susan retired from Humboldt City Schools in 2013.
In her free time, Susan enjoyed reading, sewing, tending to her plants and flowers, and taking day trips with her sisters and friends. Perhaps her favorite activity was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She often cooked large meals for her family and made sure each holiday was celebrated in a special way.
Susan was a member of Central Avenue Christian Church where she taught children in Sunday School and volunteered with Vacation Bible School each summer. She also was a Deaconess and part of the Christian Women’s Fellowship (CWF). She, additionally, enjoyed taking monthly trips with the Ramblers. Susan loved the Lord dearly and was committed to serving Him throughout her life.
Susan was preceded in death by her parents, Leon and Katie Clanton, and her son, Matthew Dougan. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, David Dougan, her daughter, Holly Walters (Casey), and her son, Daniel Dougan (Olivia); her grandchildren Haley Grace Walters, Erik Walters, Lilah Dougan, Charlotte Dougan, and Nolan Dougan; her sisters Frances Raines (Thomas) and Mary Beth Deloach (Bob); and numerous nephews and nieces.
