Kathy Shelton went home to be with the Lord and her immediate family members on November 25, 2020 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by close family members at the time of her departure. Kathy was preceded in death by her father, mother, and her brother, David. Her paternal and maternal grandparents were Mr. and Mrs. Owen Shelton and Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Pope, respectively. She also leaves behind a special family friend, Miss Edith Worthy of Lenore City, Tennessee. Kathy had a special cat named "Little Bit" for years that she dearly loved.
Kathy was born on November 24, 1950. She was one of the first babies to be born in the newly opened Jackson General Hospital. Her father, Dr. Norris Shelton, was on the staff at the hospital at the time of her birth. Kathy was the daughter of Dr. Shelton and Margaret Shelton. Dr. Shelton and his son, David, died as a result of a tragic automobile accident in December of 1955.
Kathy grew up in the Jackson area. She was a graduate of Jackson High School, where she graduated near the top of her class. Her mother, Margaret Shelton, was a business teacher at Jackson High at the time of Kathy's attendance.
After graduating from high school, Kathy attended Lambuth College and received her degree in business in 1972. After completing her degree, she moved to Memphis where she was employed at the National Bank of Commerce. Kathy worked at the bank for thirty years as a commercial loan officer and bank investor. After retiring from this job, she then returned to Jackson in order to be closer to her mother. Kathy and Margaret enjoyed being together for several years before Margaret's death.
Kathy was preceded in death by her aunt, Mary Eleanor King, and her uncles, James W. Pope and Leroy Pope. She is survived by her first cousins, Don King, Calvin King, Pat Pope Wyatt, Jimmy Pope, Steven Pope, and Susan Pope Smith. Another cousin, Jo · Eleanor King Poteete, proceeded her in death.
Arrangements for Kathy's funeral services will be provided by the George Smith and Son's Funeral Home on North Highland in Jackson. Dr. Barry Scott, pastor at Alders Gate Methodist Church in Jackson, will officiate the services. Kathy became a member of this church as an infant, when it was known as Hays Avenue Methodist Church. Graveside services will take place at Hollywood Cemetery in Jackson on Monday, November 30th at 1 pm. Due to the coronavirus pandemic there will be no visitation at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Hollywood Cemetery Association for ... cemetery upkeep services. Kathy was a board member of this association.
