Hazel was born in Whiteville, TN to George White Johnston and Fay Hazelwood Johnston. Hazel's family moved to Jackson where she attended the Jackson city schools and graduated from Jackson High School. Hazel married the love of her life, Tracy Coffman, in November 1944.
She enlisted in the Women's Army Corps in September of 1943 and served as a Technician Grade 5. In May 1945, she received an Honorable Discharge from the United States Army at Fort Adams, Rhode Island.
Mrs. Coffman was a member of the Malesus United Methodist Church. She served as a lunchroom manager at Malesus Elementary School for several years.
Mrs. Coffman was preceded in death by her parents and husband of 63 years Martin Tracy Coffman and brother William "Bubba: Johnston, Robert Johnston, and George Johnston.
Hazel leaves four sons, Dr. Martin Coffman, Jr. (Kathy) of St. Stephens, AL, Wayne Coffman (Donna) of Franklin, TN, Bobby Coffman (Jan) of Pinson, TN, and Edward Coffman (Debbie) of Jackson; Grandchildren, Clint Coffman, Chad Coffman, Gloria Brien, Vic Coffman, Jana Coffman-Compton, Allison Huntt, and Mathew Coffman; 14 grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild, and a very special friend and caregiver Cathy Hodum who always went far beyond the call of duty to make "Sunshine," as she called Hazel, more comfortable.
The family will receive friends and loved ones at a visitation to be held on Thursday, January 31, 2019 from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. at the South Chapel of George A. Smith and Sons.
A graveside service will be conducted on Thursday, January 31, 2019 at 12:30 at Highland Memorial Gardens with Rev. Travis Penney officiating. Military honors will be rendered by the U.S. Army.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials be directed to Malesus United Methodist Church.
