Born on October 29, 1942, in Madison County, to James Jasper and Willie Sue (Pirtle) Briley, David was the next to the youngest of ten children and a proud graduate of South Side High School. At South Side, he encountered the love of his life, Mary Nell Briley (Wadley), and the two were joined in matrimony on September 23, 1960, at Bemis Church of Christ by Brother Charles Williams. Their enduring union spanned 62 years until the untimely passing of Mary Nell in March of 2023. Together, they were blessed with two children, Dr. John Michael Briley and Rhea Lynn Fuller (Jeff), and a beloved grandson, Colton Allen Fuller, who brought immeasurable joy to his grandaddy's heart.
Mr. Briley worked for Five Points Lumber Company and then dedicated 39 years of his professional life to Consolidated (Ormet) Aluminum, showcasing unwavering commitment until his well-earned retirement. A man of faith, David was a devoted member and elder at Bemis Church of Christ for 37 years and, for the past 15 years, a steadfast member of North Jackson Church of Christ. His commitment to his faith was evident in the way he lived his life, embracing kindness, compassion, and a genuine concern for the well-being of others.
David found solace and joy in his pastime passion – fishing. Many days were spent out on the water, sharing the tranquility of those moments with his brother Gerald, his daughter, and two special friends, Jason Smith, and Mark Hooper. These shared experiences formed bonds that transcended mere companionship, creating memories that will forever be cherished.
In addition to his professional achievements, David was a true sportsman. As an all-star pitcher, he showcased his talent on the baseball field, earning the prestigious induction into the Little League Hall of Fame in 1999. His achievements in sports reflected not only his skill but also his dedication and sportsmanship, qualities that endeared him to teammates and opponents alike.
Preceding him in death were his parents, four brothers, and four sisters: James (Jr) Briley (Faye), John Briley (Betty), Jack Briley (Pat), Gerald Briley (Beverly), Marcella Wooley (Jim), Ella Sue Lowrance (Otha), Lucille Ward (Bobby), and Alice Briley (3 yrs.)
David is survived by his loving children, grandson, and one sister, Nancy Knolton (James). He is also remembered fondly by numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, and a cherished addition to the family, Patricia Collins, who provided devoted care and love to both David and Nell over the past three years.
As we reflect on the chapters of Mr. Briley's life, let us remember the laughter shared on the water, the camaraderie on the baseball field, the dedication in the workplace, and the unwavering faith that guided his path. Though he may no longer be with us in person, his spirit lives on in the memories we hold dear and the impact he made on all our lives.
We find solace in the knowledge that Mama and Daddy are reunited once more, which helps to celebrate the passing of both our parents. Family, friends, and all whose lives David touched are invited to North Jackson Church of Christ on Saturday, December 30, for visitation from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, followed by the memorial service at 1:00 PM. The service will be officiated by Kyle Wadley, nephew, and son, Dr. John Michael Briley, who will lead us in commemorating the life of a remarkable man, dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
