Born January 16, 1932, to Foster and Myrtle (Clift) Roe, life was always active in their bustling family of 10 siblings (Elmer Roe, Bill Roe, Bessie Priddy, J.C. Roe, Bobbi Roe , Mary Sue Williams, Lyle Roe, Sammie Roe, and Gloria Hall) of which he was a “middle” child. He often reflected on the wonderful personalities of each of his brothers & sisters. Farrell spoke of mischievously hopping a Bus to Memphis to skip school. And, most importantly, that all along, he was in elementary school with the love of his life, Jane Helen, and did not even know it until they were married right after graduating high school several years later.
He married Jane Helen (Leslie) Roe on Thanksgiving Day in 1952 and, together, they had six children: Michael, Keith, David, Tim, Paul, and Stacey. Their devotion to each other and their family was unwavering, and their legacy continues through a multitude of cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Col. Roe served in the Tennessee Army National Guard and was proud to serve his country in several fields of service: engineering, medical, signal, armor, NBC, and ordinance. After his service in the National Guard, he went on to serve as Brigadier General with the Tennessee State Guard, and to help other veterans as an ombudsman with the ESGR. He also enjoyed gathering with fellow retired Guardsmen with the 30th Separate Armored Brigade.
In civilian life, Farrell pursued a career with AT&T/BellSouth Communications, where his expertise as an engineer contributed to the advancement of telecommunications technology. He recalled that he worked to install the first magneta telephone line in Lake County, TN and the first fiber optic communication lines in West Tennessee. His professional achievements were a testament to his intellect, diligence, and passion for innovation.
Beyond his professional & military endeavors, Farrell's heart belonged to his community. A lifelong member of Optimist International and the Telephone Pioneers, he tirelessly worked to uplift and empower those around him. His dedication to service extended to his involvement with the National Bluebird Society, and as a co-founder of the Tennessee Bluebird Society. Through these organizations, he touched countless lives, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, kindness, and selflessness.
Faith was the cornerstone of Farrell's life, and his commitment to his beliefs was unwavering. As a member of Parkview Baptist Church, he found solace, strength, and community, nurturing his spiritual growth, and enriching the lives of those around him.
In every aspect of his life, Farrell Parker Roe exemplified the values of honor, integrity, and compassion. His legacy will endure through the countless lives he touched and the indelible mark he left on the world. Though he may have left this earthly realm, his spirit will forever linger in the hearts of those who were privileged to know him.
As we bid farewell to Colonel Farrell Parker Roe, let us take solace in the knowledge that his legacy of love, service, and devotion will continue to inspire and uplift us for generations to come.
