A lifelong Jacksonian, he was born in Jackson on April 1, 1929 to the late Robert and Bennie Thompson Williams. Billy was a graduate of Jackson High School, LSU School of Banking, a Dale Carnegie Graduate, and had taken many bank related courses from the University of Tennessee and Jackson State Community College.
Billy began a banking career in 1948, working through Jackson High School’s cooperative education/work program. He began working full-time from 1948-1950, when he stepped away to serve his country. He served in the Korean War with the Army Signal Corps. When Billy came back to banking, he rose through the ranks and became the Vice President of the National Bank of Commerce which later became Union Planters Bank and is now Regions Bank.
Billy enjoyed fishing and boating and he spent many weekends at their cabin at Lick Creek.
Billy was an active member of Ararat Baptist Church and in recent months attended Meridian Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Marion Smothers Sunday School Class.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy Jean Neely Williams of Jackson; a daughter, Donna Lynn Williams of Jackson; and a son, Danny Lee Williams of Jackson.
The family will receive friends on Thursday evening, December 22, 2016 from 5-7 p.m. at George A. Smith and Sons South Chapel.
A graveside service will be held on Friday morning, December 23, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Ararat Cemetery with Bro. J.V. Davis officiating. Military honors will be rendered by the U.S. Army.
The family has requested that memorials be directed to the Ararat Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, C/O Joann Haynes, 53 Hayneshaven, Jackson, TN 38301.
