December 11, 1992 – July 12, 2023
Zachary “Zak” Shane Abramson, a beloved son of Robin and Stuart Abramson and brother of Eric and Adam, passed away unexpectedly due to a loss to drug addiction. Zak was born in Houston, Texas. He was a very kind and loving son, brother, and friend who had a lot of energy, a keen sense of humor, and enjoyed playing recreational sports. As a preschooler, he participated in a combination gymnastics/dance program and judo, and then by school age, he took up bowling and baseball. He was an avid bowler and won a Texas State Grand Prix Bowling Championship along with earning some scholarships in the bowling leagues that he regularly played in with his brothers. The family enjoyed many childhood road trips to tournaments throughout Texas. Zak was also a dedicated Little League baseball player in Sugar Land, earning him the nickname “Zakhammer” related to his tenacity and hitting. He loved being in the snow and went on a number of ski trips to several states mainly with his dad who shared the same passion for cold weather and skiing. He was often a jokester who cherished making others laugh. He participated in summer theater, and once played the lead in “High School Musical.”
On the academic side, Zak graduated from Clements High School in 2011. He earned an Associate of Arts from Hinds Community College in Raymond, MS, and then a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Belhaven University in Jackson, MS in December 2022, both Magna Cum Laude. He expressed a love for helping others and was considering a career as a psychologist or as an addiction therapy nurse.
Zak battled his journey with addiction for more than a decade. He worked hard and earned many friends along the way. He participated in several rehabilitation programs over the years during which he had a number of sponsors, therapists, friends and supporters, to which the family is eternally grateful. Zak had many good days and always brought a smile to others. He was known for his huge bear hugs with family and friends.
Following his passing, friends and family gathered at the Lynwood House in Jackson, MS on July 17. It was very heartwarming for the family to hear the tributes from so many of Zak’s friends about how he was always there to offer help to others and was truly loved.
Zak is preceded in death by his grandparents, Jack and Elaine Abramson and Marilyn Levine. He is survived by his parents, Stuart and Robin, brothers Eric and Adam; grandfather Maurice Levine; aunt and uncle Amy and Barry Abramson; great uncle Earle Lilly; cousins Alex and Haley Abramson, and many extended family members and friends.
