Mrs. Virginia Sims, 95, passed away on Monday, February 22, 2016 at her home in Brandon. She was retired from the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. She was born January 6, 1921 to Cabe and Flossie Morris of Pinola, MS. She was one of six children who grew to adulthood in the same house where they were born. Their life centered around the Strong Rive Baptist Church where they all attended from early childhood. Virginia became a Christian at an early age and was an active member. She attended Pinola High School and after graduation in 1940 she entered Jackson Commercial College in Jackson, after which she soon entered the workforce. In 1942, she met Roy Sims the love of her life. They were married the same year just before Roy entered the Military service as World War II was heavily engaged. Virginia moved wherever he was based, but they spent most of their time in New London, Conn. As Roy was a cadet at the Coast Guard Academy. Then after his graduation he was asked to remain as an instructor of cadets. They loved that area of our country, but Jackson was always home. As a breast cancer survivor, Virginia was active as volunteer for the American Cancer Society. She was the State Coordinator for the “Reach to Recovery” program helping to get this service in the major hospitals across the state. She was also a visitor to breast cancer patients at the doctor’s requests, for more than twenty years. Many times she was heard to say that God alone had enabled her to do this because by His Hand she was healed.
Virginia is preceded in death by her husband of 65 years and a son-in-law Don Williamson. She is survived by her son Larry Sims of Johns Creek, GA and daughter Sandra Sims Williamson of Florence, MS. Granddaughter Karrie (Tom) Carr of Mesquite, TX and Great Granddaughter Bay. Virginia was an active member of Grace Bible Church of Ridgeland, MS. Virginia always longed to get back to worship with her brothers and sisters at Grace Bible Church during her illness, but now she will be worshiping with the King’s congregation.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 28, 2016 at Lakewood Funeral Home, 6011 Clinton Blvd, Jackson, MS 39209, from 2:00-4:00 P.M. Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. on Monday, February 29, 2016 at Grace Bible Church with visitation one hour prior.
