Veda Yates Austin passed away on January 23, 2024 at her home in Clinton at age 104. She was born in Shenandoah, Iowa on January 31, 1919 and graduated from high school there. She attended college at Maryville, Missouri and taught school. She met and married Sgt. Danny Austin in Denver, Colorado. They lived in Biloxi during WWII. They later moved to Jackson where she worked for USDA for 32 years.
Veda loved cooking, entertaining, fishing, water skiing, gardening, playing bridge, and reading. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and aunt. She loved life and all her many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Willian and Zoe Yates, her husband of 49 years, Danny Austin, her step-mother, Dorothy Yates, and her sister, Milly Russell.
She is survived by her son, Dr. James Austin (Mary), grandson, Scott and his mother Judy Steele; brother Bill Yates (Carol) of Rancho Mirage, California, sister-in-law, Bobbie Mullins and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be made to a charity of your choice.
A graveside service will be held at Lakewood Cemetery in Jackson, Monday, January 29 at 12, with visitation at 11. A reception will follow the service at Veda’s home.
The family would like to thank all those who helped care for her and offered support, especially Eve, Coleen, Mary Ellen, Carol, and other friends, neighbors, and bridge partners. Also Greg Tisdale with On Site Health, Arden Hospice, and Karen and Tanya.
