Sandra Lee Guess

Sandra Graves Guess, 71, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother passed away on November 12, 2012, at her home in Madison after an extended illness. Sandra was born on January 15, 1941, in Parkersburg, West Virginia. She graduated from Forest Hill High School and was active as the drum majorette and participated in the Lions All State Band. She received her BA degree from Millsaps College. She was a member of the Kappa Delta sorority and was active in many activities including stage performances. Sandra was a retired public school teacher. She taught English and Latin in the Jackson public school system at Murrah, Chastain, and Wingfield schools.

She married Charles D. Guess in August 1963 and celebrated 49 years of marriage this past August. Sandra was a member and past President of the South Jackson Civic League, Chairman of the Cancer Drive for the city of Jackson, past President of the Central Medical Auxillary, past delegate to the American Medical Alliance, and past member of Leadership Jackson. Sandra was active in Alta Woods United Methodist Church and Parkway Hills United Methodist Church. She enjoyed singing in the choir. She was a member of the Board of Directors of Jackson Preparatory School and Secretary for the Board of Directors of Mississippi Ballet Theatre.

Sandra enjoyed various outdoor activities such as snow skiing, sitting by the beach, white water rafting, hiking and camping in the Smokies and Colorado Rockies. She climbed one of Colorado’s fourteeners, Mt. Sherman. She enjoyed a lifetime of playing tennis with the Jackson Ladies Tennis Association and weekly bridge with her dear friends. She will forever be remembered for her commitment to her church, family and friends. She was lovingly referred to as “Great” by her grandchildren and spoiled them with chocolate bite-sized brownies at every chance.

Sandra is preceded in death by her father, Glen Graves, and mother, Gladys Graves. Sandra is survived by her husband Dr. Charles D. Guess, her two children and their spouses, Cindy Funkhouser (Chris) of Flora, MS, and Brad Guess (Corey) of Charlotte, NC. She has four grandchildren, Hannah Sills, Audrey Funkhouser, Decherd Guess and Whitaker Guess. She is also survived by her brother Dr. Glen R. Graves (Marilyn), niece, Allison Graves and nephew, Peter Graves (Carrey).

A celebration of Sandra’s life will be held at Parkway Hills United Methodist Church in Madison on Friday, November 16th at 2 PM. Visitation will be at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home in Ridgeland, Thursday, November 15th from 5 to 7 pm and Friday, November 16th from 12:30 to 2 pm at the church.
