Ray was born on October 26, 1945, the son of the late Raymond Earl and Sarah Bourn Jones. He was a graduate of Provine High School, Jackson Ms. Ray joined the United State Marine Corps where he was Platoon Sergeant and Section Chief in the 105mm Howitzer Battery, 2nd Battalion, 14th Marine Regiment of Jackson.
Ray attended Hinds Junior College and was a graduate of Bob Jones University. Ray was President of Orbit Oil, Inc., a family business started by his father. Ray was founder and director of R&D Jones Properties, LLC.
He was married to the late Diane Walls for 52 years until her untimely death in 2019. Diane and Ray had one son, Kevin Michael. Kevin was born with developmental delays. Ray and Diane adored and nurtured Kevin and advocated for services for his special needs. The Joneses became very active in supporting and promoting programs for Kevin and the special needs population. Kevin died unexpectedly in 2020 at age 48.
Ray enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing and hunting wild game. There were hunting adventures in numerous states and Canada and Africa. Nieces and nephews have fond memories of their Uncle Ray teaching them how to fish and about the wonders of nature.
Faith in Jesus Christ was central to Ray's life. He attended Riverwood Bible Church in Jackson in his youth. Diane and Ray became active members of Morrison Heights Baptist Church in Clinton. His zeal for evangelism led him to participate in many missions trips throughout the world. Ray was bold in his witness and never missed an opportunity to share the gospel with friends, new acquaintances or strangers. Ray volunteered for chaplaincy in nursing homes, hospitals and in prison ministries. Ray was proud to be a Gideon. He was on the board of FOA (Friends of Alcoholics) and the board of Gateway Rescue Mission.
He is survived by a number of cousins, sisters in law and brothers in law and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ray's failing health and limited mobility required much assistance in his last years. Loving care was provided by Etta Shelton, Belinda Garrett, and Terrie Ingram. These ladies are greatly appreciated for their kindness and dedicated service. Traditions Health and Hospice provided caring and professional services and family and friends are grateful.
Services will be held on Friday, June 10th at Morrison Heights Baptist Church in Clinton, Ms at 2:30 PM with visitation one hour prior to the service, Dr. Greg Belser and Dr. Larry Moyer officiating. Interment will follow at Lakewood Memorial Park in Jackson, Ms.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Special Needs Ministry at Morrison Heights Baptist Church, 3000 Hampstead Blvd. Clinton, Ms 39056.
