
Mary Evelyn Lotterhos, age 83, died on July 12, 2013. She was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. William Fitzgerald Hand and was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Dr. William Fitzgerald Hand, Jr. (Pete), and her husband Frederick Jacob Lotterhos, Jr.
Funeral services will be held at 12 Noon Thursday, July 18, 2013 at St. James Episcopal Church. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM in Oakridge Parish Hall at St. James. Interment will follow the service in Lakewood Memorial Park.
A graduate of Central High School, Mary Evelyn grew up in Jackson but lived in Pass Christian during World War II. She received her certification in childhood education from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. Following her graduation from Stephens, Mary Evelyn attended the University of Mississippi where she was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority. She then earned her Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from The Florida State University.
An active volunteer, church worker, and supporter of the arts in the community, Mary Evelyn was a member of St. James Episcopal Church, the Junior League of Jackson, the Debutante Club of Mississippi, The Official Mississippi Women's Club, the Southern Luncheon Club, the LeFleur Garden Club (past President), the Le Dejeuner Luncheon Club, and the Research Club of Jackson (past President). She also was a charter member of the One O'Clock Luncheon Club and a patron and supporter of New Stage Theatre, the Mississippi Museum of Art, and the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, Mary Evelyn will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her son Frederick Jacob Lotterhos III and his wife Sheila Fox Lotterhos of Jacksonville, Florida; daughter Melonee Lotterhos Slocum and her husband Phillip Reid Slocum of Jacksonville, Florida; son David Hand Lotterhos and his wife Sylvia Foster Lotterhos of Russellville, Alabama; grandson David Jacob Lotterhos of Manchester, New Hampshire; and step grandson Phillip Reid Slocum, Jr. of Mt. Dora, Florida.
Other survivors include sisters in law Margaret Lotterhos Smith and husband F. Ames Smith of Houston, Texas, Catherine Lotterhos Mills and husband Dr. Henry P. Mills of Jackson, Mississippi, and Ary Jane Lotterhos Lyle and husband Albert Wilson Lyle, also of Jackson; cousins Ann Hand Dunbar of Jackson and Sally Hand Colvard of Memphis, Tennessee; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
