or to Samaritan’s Purse, Boone, North Carolina.
Mrs. Ostenson was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on December 7, 1922 and
grew up in Los Angeles, California. She attended Occidental College and was
introduced by a mutual friend to Robert J. (“Bob”) Ostenson who was stationed in
Southern California during the last part of World War II. Bob returned to his
family’s home in Iowa at the end of the war and told them that he wanted to return
to California to finish his college education at the University of Southern
California. However, his primary reason for the relocation was to court and marry
Peggy on August 16, 1946.
Bob worked as a junior executive with Prudential Insurance Company in Los
Angeles, but both he and Peggy felt called into full-time Christian ministry. Bob
received his seminary training at Fuller Theological Seminar in Pasadena,
California. Peggy served as a very busy seminary student’s wife and then as a
“preacher’s wife” during Bob’s pastorates in Woodville and Glouster, Mississippi;
New Orleans, Louisiana; Brookhaven, Mississippi; Coral Gables, Florida; and
Montgomery, Alabama.
In addition to raising five children, Peggy was very involved in ministry activities
in the churches that Bob served. As the children grew up she also became
involved in community activities such as counseling young women at pro-life
pregnancy centers. After Bob’s passing, she moved to the Waterford Senior
Living Community in Ridgeland, Mississippi where she was very involved in
community activities. She also sponsored an annual July 4th patriotic event with
talks by military veterans, patriotic music and lots of great desserts! Until the time
of the pandemic she regularly posted insightful opinion letters about political
issues in the Clarion-Ledger.
Mrs. Ostenson was preceded in death by her husband in 2008. She is survived by
her five children: James Edwin Ostenson, Stone Mountain, Georgia; Margie Lee
Owens, Ridgeland, Mississippi; Thomas Lloyd Ostenson, Madison, Mississippi,
Carol Ann Lloyd, Birmingham, Alabama; and Stephen Richard Ostenson,
Alpharetta, Georgia. She was blessed with 15 grandchildren and 19 great
grandchildren. During the last months of her life, she sent out a weekly video
“Wednesday Meditation” to her children and grandchildren sharing experiences
she had and lessons she had learned during her life. A few weeks before her
passing, she wrote to each of her grandchildren sharing her hope and prayer that
they would come to know Christ as their personal savior as she had.
As she grew older, Mrs. Ostenson was fond of saying that she wanted to “wear out,
not rust out.” Her years of serving her family and others showed that she
accomplished her goal.
