Ethel Marie Hamil was born to Duffie Oneal Hamil and Katherene Talley Hamil in Walnut Grove, MS on October 6, 1932. She attended The Hotel Dieu School of Nursing in New Orleans. The Mississippi Board of Nursing granted her nursing license on July 9, 1954. While working at Baptist Hospital, she stepped across the street to grab a bite to eat and met Chuck McMaster. They wed on January 25, 1955. She continued doing private duty nursing while raising 3 children. Chuck was overseas with his Marine Engineer work a lot and she handled the home front, consulting him through the USPS.
The family settled in Terry, MS in 1964. Marie befriended Ms. Jean Tannehill and they started up a Junior Girl Scout troop teaching home skills, manners, and went on camping trips to state parks. Being raised in Walnut Grove with 4 brothers and 2 sisters, she could cook, sew, garden, tend to boo-boos, and hold her own with her siblings. She retired from private duty nursing around 1994 at 62 after a small stroke. Her nursing care will be remembered for the love she gave her patients; grooming her male patient’s beards, painting fingernails, coiffing hair and she even brought one to the house to show her our goats. Marie joined the Radiant Chapter of the Eastern Star and the Amaranth. Worthy Matron, Grand Representative, sitting at the Star Point stations and taking part in all their dinners, parties, etc. gave her great joy. Serving God by setting a good, Godly example by loving her family and acquaintances will be her memory.
Her husband of 63 years, Chuck McMaster was laid to rest on August 25, 2018. Marie was preceded in death by her brothers, Jack Wilbanks, Jesse Glynn and Gary Lamar and her baby sister, Mary Ann.
Marie is survived by her children, Anna Marie Weed, Lewis Charles McMaster and Patricia Lynn Jones; grandchildren, William Randall Weed, Jessica Danielle Jones Colvert, Christina Marie Weed Giraldo, and Angela Grace Weed (Martinez); great-grandchildren, Wynter Persephne Colvert, Lucy Abigail Beer, Mateo Charles Giraldo and Vincenzo Randall Giraldo.
